Cyrus Mistry: An Irish Entrepreneur
Cyrus is the chair person of the famous Tata Sons Group which holds $103 billion revenues and he was the managing director of Shapoorji Pallonji Group. This group deals with constructions, real estates, textiles , engineering goods, home appliances, shipping, publications and many more. The Shapoorji group holds joint ventures with Forbes Textiles and Eureka Forbes Limited. As a Director he was recognized as the company’s turnover increased from millions to billions. He was the managing director of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group. Under his leadership, the business grew into a billion dollar enterprise. This included the construction of complex projects in the marine, oil and gas, and rail sectors, across a number of international geographies.
Mr. Mistry who is the largest stakeholder in Tata Sons holds 18.4% of the stakes.He joined the Tata’s in 2006 as a Director. He was also serving as the board director for the Tata Group, Forbes Gokak and United Motors since 1991. After the retirement of Ratan Tata, he became the chairman in the year 2012 after which he resigned from Shapoorji Pallonji & Co.
Ratan Tata was sure that Cyrus was the qualified and intelligent one to take over the business than Noel Tata who was the brother of Ratan Tata. He was also the chairman of leading Tata group companies including Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Jaguar Land Rover Automotive, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Power Company, The Indian Hotels Company, Tata Global Beverages, Tata Chemicals, Tata Industries and Tata Teleservices. He has been made the Director of several businesses like Forvol International Services Ltd., Cyrus Investments Ltd., Buildbazaar Technologies Pvt. Ltd., Sterling Investment Corporation Pvt. Ltd., Samalpatti Power Co. Pvt. Ltd., Shapoorji Pallonji Finance Ltd., Oman Shapoorji Construction Co. Ltd., and Muscat Pallonji Shapoorji & Co. Pvt. Ltd.
The Tata Group comprised of more than 100 companies which includes Britain’s Jaguar and Land Rover car manufacturer and the Corus Group, a major European steel producer.
Cyrus was born to Pallonji Mistry and Patsy Perin Dubash on 4 July 1968. His father was known as the best construction magnate. He belongs to the Paris Indian family. After Pallonji Mistry, he was made the director and his elder brother Shapoor Mistry was made the Chairman of the Shapoor Group.
His schooling was completed in Cathedral & John Connon School in Mumbai. He was graduated in Civil Engineering from the Imperial College in Londonin 1990 and Master of Science in management from the London Business School in 1997. He married Rohiqa Chagla, the granddaughter of M.C. Chagla who was a renowned jurist in India and blessed with two sons. All the Mistry’s have Irish citizenship though they have permanent residence in India. He also served as a Director of Tata Elxsi Ltd. and Tata Power Co. Ltd.
