His net worth is about $ 1.1 Billion placing him in India’s richest people’s list. He also served two terms as the president of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). The CII represents many companies from public and private sectors in India. He was also the member of International Advisory Committee. In 1975, the Government of India appointed him as the Chairman of the Development Council for Automobiles and Allied Industries. He was also the Chairman of Indian Airlines for 3 years from 1986 till 1989.

Rahul was born on 10 June 1938. He developed a passion of becoming a great businessman. His grandfather was the fifth son of Mahatma Gandhi.He did his schooling from The Cathedral and John Connon School. In 1958, he was graduated in economics from St. Stephen’s College in Delhi. He underwent on-the-job training for 4 years at two of the group companies during which he also earned a law degree.He is also an alumnus of the prestigious Harvard Business School in USA.

Earlier his grandfather had a steel mill and a sugar mill. He faced difficulty during 1970s as there was a socialist state barred by rules and regulations. Without government approval there was no chance of becoming an entrepreneur. He was also named one of the youngest CEOs. Being the single company, people used to wait for bajaj supplies. The company was limited to produce just 20,000 units a year. Customers waited years for their supply.
Under his guidance, he lowered the costs by improving quality of the products. He ignored the government regulation by increasing the volume. He worked hard for motorized scooters, three-wheel vehicles, and motorcycles and established a factory in Akurdi and Waluj. He was married to Ruparani and has two sons who are involved in the management of the company. His daughterSunaina was married to the head of Temasek IndiaManish Kejriwal.

In 1975, he received the Man of the Year Award from the National Institution of Quality Assurance.
In 1985, he was selected as the India’s Businessman of the Year.
In 1988, he was felicitated for his achievements in a public function by the Pune Municipal Corporation.
In 1990, he received the Bombay Management Association Award for The Most Distinguished Services in the Field of Management.


In 1996, he was awarded the Rashtrabhushan Award byFIE Foundation.
In 2000, he was conferred with Tilak Award by the LokmanyaTilakSmarak Trust.
In 2002, he was awarded the Padma Bhushanfor his contribution to Indian industry.
In 2005, he was conferred with Alumni Achievement Award by the Harvard Business School in September 2005.
