Early Life:


He was born on June 14th, 1945 in the Tamil Nadu village of Moolaipozhi, Thoothukudi district, India. His parents were Vamsundari Devi and Sivasubramaniya Nadar. S. P. Adithanar, the creator of the daily DinaThanthi, is related to her mother. He attended Town Higher Secondary School as well as Elango Corporation and St. Joseph Boys Higher Secondary Schools. He graduated from Coimbatore’s PSG College of Technology with a degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. At the American College in Madurai, he earned a pre-university degree. His friends referred to him as Magus, which is Old Persian for “wizard.” Through the Nadar Foundation, he has been improving India’s educational system since 1990. His cousin is Ramanichandran, a well-known Tamil romance author.

An entrepreneur’s route


In 1967, he started working at the College of Engineering, Pune (COEP) of the Walchand Group. He quickly abandoned it to start his own business with the help of his friends and coworkers. They were S. Raman, Mahendra Pratap, Yogesh Vaidya, Subhash Arora, Arjun Malhotra, Ajay Chowdhry, and DS Puri. HCL Technologies was started with a Rs. 180,000 investment in 1976. With the founding of Far East Computers in Singapore in 1980, HCL Technologies entered the global market by selling IT hardware. He was the company’s major shareholder.

The SSN College of Engineering was established by the Shiv Nadar Foundation. His Shiv Nadar Foundation was formed in 1994. On January 17, 2005, in New Delhi, Mr. Shiv Nadar and his daughter Ms. Roshni Nadar gave Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh a check for Rs. 4 crore for the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. In honour of his father, Nadar established Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering, often known as SSN College of Engineering, in Chennai.

Shiv Nadar gave shares of HCL Technologies valued at Rs. 1 million to the SSN College of Engineering. He joined the Indian School of Business executive board in 2005. SSN Trust stated in 2008 that it would build two Vidyagyan schools in UP for rural children, providing 200 students from 50 districts of UP with free scholarships. In February 2011, he gave Town Higher Secondary School laptops and other equipment worth Rs. 80 lakhs. Up till 2014, he presided over the board of governors of the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT-KGP).

Honors and distinctions:


  • In 1995, Shiv Nadar was named Dataquest’s IT Man of the Year.
  • He received the CNBC Business Excellence Award in 2005.
  • An honorary fellowship was awarded to Shiv Nadar by the All India Management Association in 2006.
  • In 2007, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Madras University. In the same year, he was named E & Y Entrepreneur of the Year.
  • Nadar was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honour, for his contributions to the IT sector in 2008.
  • He was given the Dataquest Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010.
  • He was listed as one of the 48 Asia Pacific Philanthropy Heroes by Forbes in 2011.

Nadar was placed 16th on the 2017 list of India’s most powerful individuals by India Today magazine.

More than $1 billion has been donated by him to charitable causes.
